One energy name may be a single session away

Volume already cleared our bar. One composite number is the only thing standing between today and a trade.

Why no trade today

SHEL came within a whisker of flipping our Breakout Engine today. It scored 55.6 out of 100 — and our threshold to fire a trade is 50. Volume hit 2.10x normal, clearing our 1.5x minimum with room to spare. Price at $105.61 sits just 0.87% above the consolidation high at $104.70. So why no trade? Because the score didn't clear the full composite trigger. Close doesn't count. We've been running this system 74 days now — it's up +5.6% while SPY is flat over the same window — and a big reason that number isn't ugly is that we don't force it when the setup is 90% there. We're staying long SPY in the meantime, riding the broader market while we wait for something that actually qualifies.

Three names we're watching closest

Three names made our shortlist today, and each one is telling the same story in a slightly different voice. SHEL leads the board — an energy major sitting in a tight consolidation just above a clean breakout level, with volume already doing what we want to see. EXLS comes in second at 50.2, price at $39.57 with the consolidation high at $39.27 and volume running a stronger 2.48x. The participation is actually more impressive than SHEL's, but the composite score is tighter. ISRG rounds it out at 49.6 — price $433.19, key level at $430.00, volume 2.25x. All three show buyers showing up before the break, not chasing after it. That's exactly what the Breakout Engine is designed to find.

What would trigger us tomorrow

Nothing fires today, so there's no entry, stop, or target to publish. But here's what we're tracking heading into tomorrow. SHEL needs to hold above $104.70 and ideally post another session with volume at or above 1.5x — if the composite score clears the threshold on the open, the Breakout Engine could flag it. EXLS is worth watching closely given how strong that volume already is. ISRG is the longest shot of the three; the $430 level needs a clean close above it with real conviction behind it. If any of these trigger, we'll publish the full trade plan — entry, stop, 2R target, risk per share — same format as always.

The cost of waiting (or forcing it)

A no-trade day carries its own pair of risks. The first one is straightforward: we miss a move if one of these names breaks out tomorrow and we're not in it. That's the cost of having a threshold, and we've accepted it. The second risk is the one we guard against more carefully — forcing a trade because something *feels* close. A 55.6 score that doesn't clear the bar is still a 55.6. Chasing it erodes the logic the entire system is built on. Meanwhile, the open book is doing fine on its own: TEAM is up over 20% in 37 days, HURN is up 10.4%, and CRNX is holding small gains across a string of entries. No reason to dilute that by getting sloppy now.

One more thought before we go

Day 74. Win rate on closed trades is still 0/24 — every exit so far has been a stop-out, which is a strange thing to say when the open book looks the way it does. That gap between closed P&L and open P&L has to close one way or another. Watching *how* it closes — and what it reveals about the system underneath — is where our attention is right now.
