A quieter way to play the market's strongest tape

One name at the 97th percentile of relative strength just reclaimed a level worth watching.

What the system saw

RNG just reclaimed its 20-day moving average — and it did it quietly. No gap up, no fanfare, no headline to justify it. Yesterday's close was $76.54, sitting just below the 20dma at $75.49. Today the stock nudged back above it and held. That's the whole setup. But the reclaim itself isn't what makes this interesting — it's who's doing the reclaiming. RNG sits at the 97th percentile of relative strength over the last 63 trading days. That means while 97% of the stocks we track were struggling to get anywhere, RNG was not. SPY is flat on the day. Flat over our 68-day window. RNG has spent that same stretch proving it belongs in a different category.

Why our Relative Strength Engine liked it

The Relative Strength Engine hunts for names that have already proven they can go up in a tough tape — then waits for them to pull back to a logical support level. The logic is straightforward: strength tends to persist. When a top-decile name dips to its 20dma and holds, that's often a low-risk moment to step in, because the structure is still intact. RNG fits that description precisely. The score breakdown awarded full credit on the reclaim, volume dry-up, and held-support components — 40 of the possible points right there. The fundamentals are a mixed bag worth knowing about: EPS has flipped from -$1.74 two years ago to +$0.50 now, revenue is growing steadily, and the Piotroski F-Score is 8 out of 9 — a strong financial health read by any measure. On the other side of the ledger, the average analyst price target sits at $61.00, which is actually below where RNG trades right now, and the P/E is 60x on thin margins. We're not buying the fundamentals story here. We're buying the chart and the relative strength. Those are two entirely different bets.

The trade plan

The Relative Strength Engine entered RNG at $77.51. The stop sits at $70.57 — just below a logical structural low — putting risk at $6.94 per share. The system's 2R target is $91.38. We're deploying roughly $5,116 in the paper account, 66 shares. Run the math: if it hits the stop, we lose roughly $458. If it reaches the target, we make roughly $916. That 2-to-1 structure is the bar every position has to clear before our system pulls the trigger.

Position size: our paper account is putting about $5,116 (66 shares) into this trade, sized to risk roughly $458 if our stop is hit. This is what the system committed in its paper account — not a suggestion of how much you should put into any trade.

What could go wrong

A few things could make this trade unravel. The analyst consensus sits at an average target of $61 — meaningfully below today's price. If the broader market starts paying attention to that gap, RNG could compress toward it fast. The Altman Z-Score is 2.7, which lands in the grey zone — not distressed, but far from pristine. Negative ROE is a flag worth sitting with, even if ROIC at 21.3% tells a more encouraging story about how capital is actually being deployed. And RNG is pressing near its 52-week high, trading at the 92nd percentile of its range — which means there's less cushion above than there used to be. If the 20dma breaks down again and doesn't recover quickly, the stop at $70.57 does the work.

One more thought before we go

Day 68 of the experiment, and the win rate on closed trades is still sitting at 0% — yet the paper account is up 3.3% against SPY's flat line over the same stretch. Open positions are carrying it. TEAM is doing a lot of the heavy lifting. RNG is the newest name in the book, already down 1.1% on day one. We've seen that movie before. The real question now is whether the 20dma holds or gives way — and the answer is coming sooner than you'd think.
