Why no trade today

IMAX came within shouting distance of a signal this morning — and then stopped short. The Breakout Engine scored it 30.4 out of 100. Our threshold is 50. That gap isn't a rounding error; it's the system telling us the setup isn't cooked yet. Price is sitting at $56.96, just above the consolidation high of $56.68. Volume came in at 1.56x average — which actually clears our 1.5x minimum. So what's holding the score down? One box checked isn't enough. The Breakout Engine wants full confluence across all inputs, and right now we're not there. Until everything lines up, we don't pull the trigger. We're now 60 days into this experiment. The system is up 3.0% against SPY's flat 0.0% over the same window — 3.0 points of alpha with a 0% win rate on closed trades. That last part still raises eyebrows, and it should. Every point of gain right now is sitting in open positions, not locked in. We know it. We're watching it.

Three names we're watching closest

Of everything on the board right now, IMAX is the setup that keeps earning a second look. It's been consolidating, volume is already ticking where we want it, and price is within arm's reach of the breakout level at $56.68. The Breakout Engine flags a setup when price gets within 0.5% of the range high — we're essentially there. What's missing is the full confluence needed to push the score past 50. That could change fast. On the open-position side, IOVA is up 35.0% on day 15 and TWST is up 34.7% on day 11 — both still open, both still being held by the system. TEAM is carrying two positions up 4.4% and 3.4%. The CRNX cluster — thirteen positions ranging from day 26 to day 52 — is grinding quietly in positive territory. Nothing dramatic, but nothing broken either. SPY is parked at $767.77, essentially flat on the day. We're still long SPY as a baseline while we wait for the engine to find something worth acting on.

What would trigger us tomorrow

Here's what flips IMAX into a live signal: price needs to push within 0.5% of the $56.68 consolidation high — it's already there — while the Breakout Engine's composite score clears 50. Volume confirmation above 1.5x average is already borderline met. If those conditions converge tomorrow morning, we're in signal territory. We're not pre-announcing a trade. We're saying this is the closest thing on the board right now, and we'll be watching the open. No entry, no stop, no target today — because no trade fired. If a signal triggers, those numbers go in tomorrow's article.

The cost of waiting (or forcing it)

The risk of waiting is real, but it's the right risk to take. Markets move while we sit on our hands, and occasionally a setup matures fast enough that hesitation costs us the entry. The bigger danger, though, is forcing a trade at a 30.4 score because it feels like we should be doing something. That's how systems get sloppy. Thirty-point setups lose more than they win. We'd rather miss a move in IMAX than own a trade the engine doesn't believe in. Patience isn't glamorous. It's just the job.

One more thought before we go

Day 60. Eighteen closed trades, zero wins on paper — and yet the system is up 3.0% because the open positions are carrying the weight. That's a strange way to run a scoreboard, and it won't stay that way forever. At some point, positions close. What happens to that 3.0% when they do is the question worth sitting with right now.
