Why no trade today

DBRG pressed right up against its consolidation high — $15.98 — and held its breath. The Breakout Engine scored it 59.8 out of 100 this morning. Our threshold is 50, so yes, it technically cleared the bar. But clearing the bar and firing a signal are two different things. The system also requires price to be within 0.1% of the range high on at least 1.5x average volume. On volume, DBRG showed up — 7.70x the daily average. That part looked excellent. The price just didn't break. So we watched. And then nothing happened. No trade today. That's not a failure — that's the system working exactly as designed. We don't chase. We wait for the entry to come to us. Meanwhile, we're staying long SPY, riding the broader market while the engines keep scanning for something worth stepping into.

Three names we're watching closest

DBRG is interesting right now for one specific reason: it's been coiling. The stock has been pressing against $15.98 — that consolidation high — while volume builds quietly underneath it. When volume expands before a breakout, the market is leaning in. It doesn't guarantee anything, but that's exactly the kind of tension the Breakout Engine was built to catch. The score of 59.8 reflects it. Close enough that DBRG stays on the watchlist. Elsewhere in the book, the portfolio is far from bored — IOVA is up 25.0% in 11 days, TWST up 22.1% in seven, TEAM up 8.8% and 7.7% across two positions. We're 56 days in without a new addition, but the existing positions are doing the talking. For context: the system is sitting at +2.4% versus SPY's flat 0.0% over that same window, with 19 open positions, all of them in positive territory except one CRNX that's essentially flat.

What would trigger us tomorrow

If DBRG is still on the board tomorrow, the Breakout Engine needs two things to pull the trigger: price within 0.1% of $15.98, confirmed on volume of at least 1.5x the daily average. Volume isn't the problem — 7.70x today proves that side of the equation is already running hot. What we need is price to clear $15.98 cleanly, with that volume behind it. Entry would be near the breakout point, stop just below the consolidation base, and a 2R target roughly double the distance from entry to stop. We don't have exact numbers yet because we don't have tomorrow's open, but the structure is clear. If DBRG fades back into the range and volume dries up, we move on.

The cost of waiting (or forcing it)

Two risks worth naming. First, DBRG could break out overnight or pre-market before our system gets a clean read — and we'd miss it. That happens sometimes. We don't trade on half a signal. Second, and more broadly: there's always pressure after a quiet day to force a trade that isn't quite there. A score of 59.8 sounds close to 60, but it's still a no. We've seen what happens when you slide the threshold because a setup 'feels right.' The score exists precisely so we don't have to feel anything — we just read it. Forcing a trade to break a quiet stretch would undercut the entire point of running a rules-based system.

One more thought before we go

Day 56. No new position. One setup that got close but didn't close. The win rate on completed trades is still 0% — we see it too, and we're not looking away from it. But the open positions are telling a different story right now. IOVA at +25.0%, TWST at +22.1%, TEAM printing in the high single digits. It'll be worth watching which one of those closes out first — and whether 'win rate' still reads the same way on day 57.
