Today's market and our positions
SPY closed at $748.95, down 0.79% on the day. Not a collapse — but not a market that rewarded aggression either. We came into today with no open positions, and that turned out to be exactly the right place to be. Sitting in cash while the index bleeds isn't exciting. It's not supposed to be. The system didn't see a setup worth taking, so it didn't take one. Sometimes the most important move is the one you don't make.
What our open trades are doing
Nothing to break down position by position today — the book was flat all session. But the six-day scorecard tells an interesting story. System: +1.6%. SPY over the same window: -0.3%. That's +1.9% of alpha built on one closed trade and a lot of patience. Win rate on closed trades sits at 0/1 — we're not going to spin that. A loss is a loss, and it'll stay in the record. What kept the overall P&L positive was sizing discipline and clean exits doing exactly what a rules-based system asks them to do. You don't have to be right every time. You have to be disciplined every time. There's a difference, and days like today are where that difference shows up.
Today's closed trades, post-mortem
No trades closed today. The one closed trade in our history went against us — win rate sits at 0% on paper, and we're not hiding from that number. What we'd point out is that a single-trade sample tells you almost nothing about a system's actual edge. One rep is noise. We need more reps before that number means anything in either direction. That's just how this works, and we're comfortable saying so.
What could change by tomorrow's open
A few things worth watching before tomorrow's open. The -0.79% move in SPY wasn't violent, but if that selling carries into the overnight session or bleeds into pre-market, breadth could look ugly by the bell. We're also watching whether the names that surfaced on today's scans hold their levels — a gap-down open has a way of killing breakout setups before they ever get a chance to breathe. If volatility ticks up, the engines may stay quiet again. That's fine. Forcing trades into a choppy tape is exactly how accounts get chewed up.
What we're watching tomorrow
The Breakout Engine runs its overnight scan in a few hours. By morning, we'll know whether anything set up cleanly enough to act on. If the market stabilizes, there are a couple of names we've had our eye on for a few days now. If it gaps down again, we'll probably be back here tomorrow afternoon with another flat book — and that's an outcome we're completely comfortable with. Patience is a position too. We'll see what the scan brings.
