The week at a glance
We went 0-for-1 this week and still beat the index. That's not spin — it's just what disciplined position sizing looks like in practice. The system finished the week up +2.48% against SPY's +1.37%, putting us +1.12% ahead for the week and +1.99% ahead cumulative. Five days in. One closed trade. Four watchlist days where we looked at setups and walked away empty-handed on purpose. That last part is worth sitting with — skipping four signals isn't indecision. It's the filter doing exactly what it's supposed to do.
Trades we closed this week
The one trade we took was PIII, flagged by the Relative Strength Engine on July 6th. Entry at $11.44, stopped out the same day at $9.81. That's a $1.63 loss per share, and same-day stops always sting a little. Here's the honest read: the RS Engine saw relative strength coming into the open, the setup cleared the scan, and the stock just didn't hold. That happens. A stop that fires on day one isn't a failure — it's the system doing its job. We defined the risk before the trade opened, price said no, and we got out. Loss contained. What kept the week green wasn't some other trade riding to the rescue. It was four days of not forcing entries that weren't there. Flat beats a forced loss every time.
What we tuned this week
Nothing structural changed in the engines this week. The Relative Strength Engine is still running as the primary scanner, with the Breakout Engine and Mean Reversion Engine on standby as we build out the signal history. What did shift: our watchlist filtering criteria got tighter after the PIII stop. Specifically, we're weighting intraday volume confirmation more heavily before the RS Engine triggers an entry. PIII had relative strength on the daily, but the intraday tape was thin at the open — that's a tell we want to catch earlier. Think of this as a calibration week, not a broken-system week. One trade is too small a sample to draw conclusions from, but it's not too small to learn from.
What we're cautious about next week
A few things worth tracking as we head into next week. SPY had a solid week — up +1.37% — but that kind of broad lift can paper over individual stock weakness that only surfaces when the index softens. If SPY gives back some of those gains, names the RS Engine flags could face more headwinds than the setup implies. We're also still early enough in this run that we don't have a deep signal history to lean on. Our edge estimates are more theoretical than empirical right now. We believe in the model, but five days and one trade don't prove anything yet — and we're not pretending otherwise. Finally, earnings season is starting to heat up. The Breakout Engine in particular can get whipsawed around reporting dates if entries aren't timed carefully against announcement calendars. We'll be filtering for that.
Looking ahead to Monday
Week one is done. One trade, one stop, one week of positive alpha against the index. A 0% win rate while the account is up is a strange thing to look at — but it's actually the cleanest demonstration possible of why risk management matters more than batting average. Next week, we're hoping the engines find something cleaner to work with. The watchlist has a few names starting to set up. Whether any of them cross the threshold and become actual trades depends entirely on what price does — and that part's not up to us.
